A conversation with David Easton MSc CEng FIHEEM MIET, Director at Zener Engineering Services Ltd (ZES) and a Chartered Engineer since 2008.

Introduction

Chartered Engineer (CEng) registration remains one of the most widely recognised indicators of professional competence, leadership, and ethical responsibility within Engineering. While many Engineers progress towards Chartership through structured internal development programmes, this is not the only route.

Faye: “David, could you briefly describe your role and professional background?”

David:
“I’m a Director of Zener Engineering Services Ltd, where we deliver specialist GxP compliance Engineering and IT services predominantly to the Life Science industry. My role encompasses technical authority, project governance, Client assurance, and strategic decision-making.

As with many small and medium-sized Engineering Consultancies, senior roles are inherently multidisciplinary — combining technical depth with commercial, contractual, and leadership responsibilities.

My career has largely been Client-facing, with a strong emphasis on accountability and professional judgement rather than hierarchical management structures.”

Faye: “When did becoming Chartered with the IET become a priority for you?”

David:

“Following a 4-year apprenticeship with chemical giant ICI, as a young technician, I looked up to Chartered Engineers for their professionalism and integrity. After having my career curtailed for over 10 years and following redundancy in unjust and unpleasant circumstances, I decided to take control of my own career development, and Chartership then became an important professional objective.

I gained a Master's Degree in Pharmaceutical Engineering from Manchester University and I progressed my career more in 5 years than a blue chip pharma company did in 10! - My first degree day release was stopped halfway through.

I viewed Chartership as a means of formally recognising the level of responsibility I was now carrying and the standards I was working to. In many Client environments, professional credibility and assurance are critical, particularly where engineering decisions have safety, financial, operational, and most importantly, Patient consequences.

Achieving CEng registration with the IET was therefore about demonstrating alignment with recognised professional standards, both for my own development and for the confidence of ZES's Clients. Studying an MSc provided credibility to my abilities and enabled me to take on more responsibility and, for example, manage £20m Sterile manufacturing projects for Clients.”

Faye: “Your route to Chartership involved Client sponsorship rather than internal development. How did this come about?”

David:

“My route to Chartership developed quite naturally through long-term Client relationships, which came about through my performance on Client projects. Over time, I became a trusted Engineering authority for a number of Clients, taking responsibility for Design decisions, Risk Management, Compliance, Validation and strategic technical input.

In some cases, Clients explicitly valued — and in effect required — Chartered-level assurance for the work I undertook, whilst exhibiting professional integrity and providing sound technical support and advice. Client support and sponsorship for my Chartership application, even after a significant amount of time had lapsed since formal contracts had ended, reflected the professional trust already embedded in those relationships. Rather than being driven by an internal line manager or corporate framework, the sponsorship was rooted in real-world accountability, technical expertise, integrity and professionalism.”

Faye: “How did this differ from a traditional internal management-led route to Chartership?”

David:
“The primary difference was self-direction and not having to be part of any internal “clique”. Without a formal internal Chartership programme, responsibility for understanding and evidencing the IET’s competence requirements rested entirely with me.

In a traditional route, development activities are often structured, reviewed, and framed by managers who are already Chartered themselves. In my case, the evidence came directly from Client-delivered projects — leading engineering decisions, managing risk, and exercising independent professional judgement. As an example, one of my sponsors was a European Quality Director of a Blue Chip Life Science organisation.

This required a disciplined and reflective approach to mapping practical experience against the IET competence framework.”

Faye: “What challenges did you encounter during the process?”

David:
“One challenge was recognising the value of experience gained outside of formal management roles. In my opinion, Engineers working in Consultancy or Client-embedded positions often underestimate the level of competence they demonstrate on a daily basis. I was once told by a former manager that I needed to “ learn how to blow my own trumpet ”!

Another challenge was time. Client-facing roles are delivery-focused, and documenting experience retrospectively, 2 years later in my case, with evidence, can be demanding. Understanding how to articulate responsibility, leadership, and ethical decision-making in the language required for professional registration is a skill in itself. The willingness of former Clients to spend time on my application was a great asset to my application, for which I am truly grateful.

The final major hurdle in the process was the Technical Interview , which took place in front of an expert panel in London. This stage was particularly significant, as it brought together experienced professionals who were responsible for evaluating both my personal technical knowledge and my ability to apply that knowledge in practical scenarios.

I recall during the interview, I was asked a series of in-depth questions relating to my experience and responsibilities, requiring me to explain concepts clearly, whilst justifying my decisions, and demonstrating how I would approach complex technical problems and how I lead from the front. The panel were not only interested in whether I knew the theory, but also in how I could translate that understanding into real-world solutions. In several cases, I was presented with scenario-based questions where I had to think critically, analyse the situation, and outline the steps I would take to resolve it.

In addition to technical knowledge, the panel assessed my communication skills and professionalism. Because the interview was conducted in front of multiple experts, it was important to remain composed, structured in my responses, and confident when discussing my ideas. I made sure to explain my reasoning clearly and engage with the panel’s follow-up questions, demonstrating my technical competence, professionalism and my ability to collaborate with experienced colleagues.

Overall, this stage represented the culmination of the registration process. Presenting my knowledge and experience to a panel of experts in London was both challenging and rewarding, and it provided an opportunity to showcase the depth of my knowledge and understanding, as well as my readiness to take on professional responsibilities in the field.

That said, these challenges were outweighed by the clarity the process brought to my own professional practice, my technical knowledge and my own personal level of professional integrity, a quality which seems more and more lacking in industry today. The interview was certainly not just a formality."

Faye: “How did the IET respond to this non-traditional route?”

David:
“The IET listened to my circumstances and their decided approach was pragmatic and outcomes-focused. The emphasis was clearly on what responsibility I held, how I exercised professional judgement, and what impact my decisions had — with less on formal organisational hierarchy. The hierarchy was Client project-based.

My Client sponsors were able to speak directly of my competence, technical ability, accountability, integrity and professionalism during Client projects, which aligned well with the IET’s assessment criteria. This flexibility is important, as Engineering careers increasingly span Consultancy, project-based work, and independent practice.

The technical interview was a surprise, but an opportunity I grasped with both hands. Having an excellent and understanding IET-appointed Professional Registration Advisor was critical. Mr Albert Taylor was mine and he certainly put me through my paces. Without Albert I would have found the process even more daunting. I will be eternally indebted to Albert for his expertise, patience and understanding."

Faye: “Did Client sponsorship influence how you perceived your professional standing?”

David:
“Yes, significantly. Client sponsorship, in my case two years after finishing various projects, reinforces the idea that Chartership is not just a personal achievement, but a professional assurance mechanism. This was a huge feather in my cap, a rubber stamp of my abilities – rather than my mate (my boss) - signing me off.

Knowing that Clients value Chartered recognition as part of Governance, Risk Management, and Quality Assurance for me reframed Chartership as something that directly supports the wider engineering field — not simply individual career progression.”

Faye: “What advice would you give to engineers considering a similar approach?”

David:
“Firstly, recognise that Client trust and responsibility are strong indicators of professional competence. If you are accountable for Engineering outcomes, that experience is highly relevant to Chartership registration.

Secondly, seek early guidance — whether through the IET, professional networks, or mentors who understand the process.

Finally, document experience continuously. Reflecting on decision-making, leadership and ethical considerations are invaluable, both for the application and for professional development more broadly. Additionally document where your Professional Integrity was tested and your learning outcomes.”

Faye: “ Do you see Client-sponsored Chartership becoming more common?”

David:
"I hope so. Engineering practice is evolving, with more professionals now operating in Consultancy-led, project-based, or hybrid roles. In my view, professional institutions must continue to recognise competence demonstrated across all areas of industry.

Client sponsorship aligns well with this reality, as it is grounded in demonstrable responsibility and professional trust.”

Faye: “Looking back, what does Chartership mean to you now?”

David:
“Achieving Chartered Engineer status with the IET validated the way I had been practising Engineering for many years and I unequivocally silenced the doubters. It confirmed that independent judgement, Client Accountability, Ethical Responsibility and most of all Integrity are central to professional engineering — regardless of organisational structure, and any organisation internal cliques or ethos.

It was a challenging route, but one that accurately reflected my actual technical knowledge and professional practice values.”

Audit Trail : A legally binding electronic signature system generates logs or records that verify who signed the document and when.

Since a simple typed signature does not meet the above criteria, it is not considered legally binding in most jurisdictions.

From the late 1980s onwards, validation of computer systems in pharmaceutical manufacturing has assumed much greater importance, due to increased regulatory scrutiny by the FDA and the MHRA. The issue of electronic data integrity and security was again highlighted by the Enron financial scandal, which resulted in a massive fraud, where shareholders lost tens of billions of dollars. Many Enron executives, Enron’s accounting firm, and certain bank officials, were prosecuted.

So how does this all apply to patient safety? Simply ‘ Data Integrity is Data integrity, regardless of what the data applies to, ' according to Zener Engineering Services Director and CSV expert David Easton.

David explains 'The shape and size of the validation strategy for a Computer System depends on the extent and detail of the user requirements. The validation activity must test and ensure the reliability, consistent intended performance, and ability to discern invalid or altered records, of any computer system.'

Here are some basic functionality requirements, which should be validated to ensure the integrity and security of data. While the list below is not comprehensive, GxP Computer Systems should have the ability to:

Generate accurate and complete copies of records in both human-readable and electronic form, suitable for future inspection, review, and copying.

Lack of Understanding?

In the experience of ZES Director David Easton, there seems to be a lack of understanding in some quarters regarding the issues surrounding electronic data security and integrity for Computer System.

David said 'As an example, an organisations Director told me that the electronic data stored on a particular Computer System, for medical devices, was ‘safe and secure’, based on the fact that the system had a ‘front-end’ password. The system in question, was, in fact, the most insecure I’ve ever worked on, due to the ability of any employee, once signed in via the front-end password, to change any record, including critical results, without any audit trail of when the actual change was made, or by whom. The Computer System was new to the organisation.

David continued ' I also recall that an employee called David, who sat behind me, typed in a password **** to gain access to a Computer System, at which point I asked the employee: ‘Please tell me your password isn’t ‘DAVE’, to which the employee replied ‘Yes, and I’ve had it for four years’.

In 2014 David was involved with an East Midlands pharmaceutical company, where the Site Director gained access to a GxP Computer System with the password - 'let me in'. 'The understanding and regard that some pharmaceutical and medical device companies place on computer system Security and Data Integrity is some what lacking in certain areas.'

Said a Project Manager with No GxP experience - working for a Blue Chip Pharmaceutical company.

In the complex landscape of Software Validation and Quality Assurance (QA) in the Life Science Industry, where meticulous attention to detail is paramount, an occurrence of non-compliance can have far-reaching consequences. The case study "You Went To QA” delves into a scenario where non-compliance issues arose, and, surprisingly, the Client's QA team failed to ensure the correct action was taken. Through the lens of this real-world example, ZES explore the ripple effects of non-compliance, the potential pitfalls of oversight, and the lessons that can be gleaned for bolstering QA practices and having a QA department that is actually in control.

A Scenario of Non-Compliance Unfolds

In the ZES case study, a GxP Cloud software development and implementation project was underway with an unclear set of requirements, standards, and compliance expectations of the Software Supplier. It also became evident that certain team members of the Client's personnel were deviating from established guidelines and Client company policies and procedures. This non-compliance manifested itself in various forms – from GxP coding practices that violated established standards to a lack of adherence to regulatory documentation requirements.

Initial Signs of Non-Compliance

In any project, early detection of non-compliance is crucial to prevent its escalation. Unfortunately, in this case, the red flags were initially overlooked (possibly deliberately) or underestimated by the preferred hands-off approach by the Client’s QA department. Warning signs such as “apparently" completed testing without approved User Requirements, untraceable coding, deviation from Client Policies and Procedures, and other sporadic sizeable documentation gaps were not promptly recognised by the Client's QA Department as potential indicators of non-compliance.

Communication Silos and Unacknowledged Concerns

One contributing factor to the oversight, in the opinion of ZES, was the breakdown in communication channels. Client team members, including QA personnel and Users, were operating in silos, with limited cross-functional dialogue. Concerns raised by ZES about non-compliance had not been previously effectively communicated to the senior QA team by the Client's project team, and vice versa, possibly deliberately.

QA Oversight: A Gap in Vigilance

ZES assumed that the Client's QA team, as the guardian of quality standards, would be quick to identify and address non-compliance issues. However, in this case, the senior QA team were happy to operate at arm's length and were possibly inadvertently blindsided by a combination of factors, including a heavy workload, limited visibility of ongoing project progress, and a Project Manager who had little regard for compliance, policies and procedures and was happy to spin a yarn.

Root Cause Analysis: Identifying Systemic Issues

The aftermath of this case should have prompted a comprehensive root cause analysis. However ZES have little confidence that it did. ZES uncovered systemic issues within the Project Management structure and QA including insufficient communication channels, a lack of cross-functional collaboration, and Senior QA operating at arm's length (for example just signing the Validation Summary Report.) These factors, when combined, created an environment where non-compliance issues could thrive unseen and unheard, again potentially deliberately, by QA.

One of the main areas of concern for ZES was the intentional dumbing down of the potential risk to the Patient. The System was classed as a simple database by the Client. However, in the expert opinion of ZES, this was incorrect, as the System actually provided significant functionality for Users, i.e. to decide who was correctly trained, schedule appointments, send referrals, provide chat rooms, provide limited patient interaction, and provide functionality to change clinical interventions. There were also GDPR implications.

It is the expert opinion of ZES a simple database does not provide the degree of functionality, the System did in this case.

The Impact: Cost Overruns, Delayed Timelines, and Reputational Damage

The repercussions of non-compliance can be multifaceted. In this case, the project faced costly overruns due to the need for extensive rework to rectify non-compliance-related issues. Timelines were delayed as the team grappled with re-testing and resolving unexpected complications. Additionally, the reputational damage incurred due to the discovery of non-compliance had broader implications for both the Client and their Project team, not to mention the potential risk to the Patient.

Lessons Learned: Strengthening QA Practices

From this case study, several critical lessons emerge for fortifying QA practices:

Enhanced Communication Channels:

Establishing transparent communication channels between Suppliers, Project Managers and QA teams is paramount. Regular meetings, cross-functional collaboration, and open dialogue can ensure that concerns are identified and addressed in a timely manner.

Continuous Training and Awareness:

Keeping both Project Managers and QA teams abreast of evolving compliance standards through continuous training sessions fosters a culture of awareness. This ensures that all team members remain vigilant and proactive in identifying and rectifying non-compliance.

Regular Audits and Reviews:

Implementing regular audits and reviews of coding practices, documentation, and development processes by technically competent personnel acting on behalf of QA, can serve as a preventive measure. These audits act as checkpoints to identify deviations from established standards before they escalate. QA should approve project documents at every key stage of the project and not just take the word of a Project Manager.

Proactive Issue Escalation:

Encouraging a culture where all team members feel empowered to escalate concerns without fear of reprisal is crucial. Early detection and escalation of non-compliance issues prevent them from becoming entrenched problems with widespread implications. Plausible deniability should not be relied upon, when patients’ lives are at risk.

In conclusion, the case study highlights non-compliance, and QA oversight underscores the imperative of vigilance in QA practices. Non-compliance, when left unaddressed, can lead to cascading consequences, impacting project timelines, budgets, overall quality, but most importantly the Patient. National Mini 7 Championship, Croft Circuit 16th/17th Sept 2023

Dunlop National Mini Challenge

Since the first Formula Mini Se7en race at Brands Hatch in 1966, the Mini 7 Racing Club has remained a favourite with drivers, race commentators and spectators alike.

The National Mini 7 Championship is for classic Minis which are built to strict regulations and governed by the Mini 7 Racing Club. The championship is contested over 17 races which are held at major racing circuits in the UK and occasionally abroad. The events are extremely popular with drivers and spectators alike, with most races being streamed live.

Rounds 16 and 17 of this year’s championship were held at the Croft Racing Circuit in North Yorkshire, just down the road from the Zener Engineering Services Ltd North East offices at Netpark in Sedgefield, County Durham, United Kingdom. It was a long drive from his home, arriving at the circuit at around 7:30 am, Graham was full of confidence, hope and anticipation. The paddock was set up and the Zener Engineering Services Ltd sponsored Mini was prepared for the first free practice session of the day at 10:00 am. The circuit was wet so a change to wet tyres and suspension setup was undertaken by Graham and his team and out the little Mini Se7en went for the first practice.

The first practice session went very well with Graham straight on the pace. By the time of the second practice session at 12:30pm, the rain had passed but the racing track was still damp so Graham made the decision to leave the Mini on wet tyres. Again the Mini and Graham drove well with the track drying all the time. For the final session of the day at 3:30pm the track was fully dry, so Graham, supported by his team of mechanics, changed the Mini back to fully dry settings and back to dry tyres. During the final session the Mini and Graham drove “ok” but not quite as quick as Graham and his team had hoped.

After an exhausting day, it was an early night for Graham as qualifying started at 10:00 am the next day!

Saturday 16th September 2023

Overnight the weather took a turn for the worse and it rained all night. The moderate wind had partially dried the circuit: however, the track still looked damp on the Saturday morning. Graham and his team set to work for another tyre change - back to wet tyres which was the consensus of opinion and was deemed the best option. Before the qualifying race, the Minis assembled in the designated area of the track, where it turned out that not everyone had reached the same conclusion, with half of the racing Minis on wet tyres and half on dry tyres.

Qualifying took 20 minutes and Graham finished 11th on the grid. Not too bad considering that this was Graham’s first time at the Croft Racing Circuit. The track was also drying fast and Graham and his team set about yet another tyre change, back to dry tyres.

Race 1: The lights went out and a mix up with the circuit lights resulted in a bad getaway for Graham. ZES are sorry to report that he was initially dead last, but he made up a couple of places on the first corner! A few seconds later while exiting the 80 mph chicane, a part of the rear suspension failed on the Mini, which put the Mini into a high-speed spin and consequently out of the race. Graham was fine due to the excellent safety features built into the Mini and an exceptional racing seat. Replacement parts were fitted by Graham and his team and the Mini was then set up for the second race on Sunday.

Sunday 17th September 2023

Race 2: The weather was much improved for the final race of the weekend, so a fully dry setup was the obvious choice for the day. Being the first retirement in Race 1 meant that Graham was unfortunately last on the grid. Graham reported that straight away the Mini felt good and he made a great start and got up to 8th position and was challenging the leading cars. Then coming towards the end of the first lap, the car directly in front of Graham suddenly had an oil line fail which spilled a significant amount of oil onto the track. This resulted in yet another spin for Graham and a trip across the grass. Graham managed to get the Mini back on to the circuit but the pack was well in front. Graham and the other racing drivers carried on for a few laps but the whole circuit was covered in oil and eventually the officials decided to throw out the red flag and stop the race.

Conclusion:

Not the results Graham was looking for but nevertheless an enjoyable weekend was had by Graham, his team, representatives of Zener Engineering Services Ltd and their guests.

The next race for Graham and his team is the final round of the championship at Silverstone on the 6th and 7th of October 2023.
